‘savage’ opera about the ruination of an island community
co-creation with Calefax Reed Quintet
A hamlet, cut off from the mainland by the sea. The inhabitants: hardworking and bony, their skins tanned by the salty wind, their spirits hardened by the constant struggle with the sea as it eats away at the dykes. But more than the power of storm and water they fear the passions that lie deep within them. At the head of the community, the old man Per Abba. He takes the lead in the ritual the inhabitants perform repeatedly each day: a prayer beseeching Mary, Star of the Sea, to calm the forces of nature, both internal and external.
Over the years, all the women have disappeared from the community, they have died or perhaps fled. Little is left for the men who remain but monotonous work on the dykes. To replace the sand washed away by the sea, they dig themselves in deeper and deeper. Both literally and figuratively, because they are frightened by the idea that beyond the dyke, across the sea, a different life could be possible.
Then a young woman arrives over the sea. The men recognise her immediately as Mary. But when their prayers go unheard and their unspoken desires remain unsatisfied, passions that have been contained for years begin to break through the dykes.
Dijkdrift will be a primal, sensual, site-specific performance about a closed community. As animals stranded on a remote island can evolve into strange, new species, over decades these island-dwellers have developed into a peculiar sort of people, with oddly shaped bodies and curious habits. Their language is a mixture of archaic Dutch, dialect and Latin. The music of their ritual is a distorted version of Claudio Monteverdi Vespers of 1610. While the ritual initially brings peace and order, at the end of the performance it degenerates into Dionysian violence.
